Pig’s Fear of Mud Saves Her from Becoming Sausage

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: This is a true story about a pig that will not soon, if ever, become sausage, due to the fact that she is different, and stands out from the crowd of some other 200 pigs on a farm in North Yorkshire, England.

The pig has Mysophobia, or fear of dirt, which is a type of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, commonly known as OCD. 1
I wasn’t aware that a pig could suffer from OCD, but the cute piglet’s ingenious owner, a farmer in North Yorkshire, England, found an unusual cure.

The farmer had a special pair of boots custom-made for the piglet, and she now apparently has no more fear of walking in mud, plus, according to the narrator of this NBC News video, this particular pig will not be going to market, thus avoiding the fate of her fellow pigs.

1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mysophobia - According to this Wikipedia article: "Mysophobia is a term used to describe a pathological fear of contact with dirt, to avoid contamination and germs. Someone who has such a fear is often referred to as a "mysophobe." The term was introduced by William A. Hammond in 1879[1][2] when describing a case of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibited in repeatedly washing one's hands."

"This phobia is sometimes referred to as germophobia (or germaphobia), a combination of germ and phobia to mean fear of germs, as well as bacillophobia and bacteriophobia."

Sequel To: Lost Parrot Mr. Yosuke Nakamura Tells Vet Name, Address

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: I recently published a post about Mr. Yosuke Nakamura, an extremely intelligent African grey parrot who was recently lost, and then found. *If you missed that post, entitled "Lost Parrot Mr. Yosuke Nakamura Tells Vet Name, Address", it is a must-read, so don’t miss it! This previously published post also contains a link to the related MSNBC article.

My previously published post focused on the amazing abilities of the wonder parrot, Mr. Yosuke Nakamura. The focus of the post that you are presently reading is on the veterinarian, whose name is unknown. Yes, we do know the name of the parrot, (again, the parrot's real name truly is Mr. Yosuke Nakamura), and the policeman’s name, Shinjiro Uemura, to whom the parrot would not say one word. Unfortunately, the article declined to mention the name of the amazing vet, who might perhaps be the real Dr. Dolittle!

Of course, Dr. John Dolittle is a character invented by author Hugh Lofting, who wrote a series of Dr. Dolittle books for children. Besides that, Dr. Dolittle is not from Nagareyama, Japan, (the town in which the now famous conversation between the parrot and the vet took place). "He lived in a little town called, Puddleby-on-the-Marsh". 1 But is it possible that Dr. Dolittle is real? There is a similarity here (well, sort of): Dr. Dolittle was taught the art of speaking to animals by his pet parrot named Polynesia. 2

No, sadly I must admit that Dr. Dolittle definitely is not real, but the vet in Nagareyama, Japan definitely is very real. This true story, about a lost parrot named Mr. Yosuke Nakamura, and his willingness to divulge pertinent information about himself to the listening and trustworthy ( at least in the parrot’s mind) veterinarian, certainly must give one pause.

Lost Parrot Mr. Yosuke Nakamura Tells Vet Name, Address

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: This is a true story about the amazing wonder parrot Mr. Yosuke Nakamura. When local police rescued the lost African grey parrot, Yosuke, on a neighbor's roof in Nagareyama, a city located near Tokyo, Japan, the parrot told a veterinarian his name, full address, and even entertained some folks with a musical performance!

"After spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman Shinjiro Uemura said."

"He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet."

"'I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura,' the bird told the veterinarian, according to Uemura. The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs."

"'We checked the address, and what do you know, a Nakamura family really lived there. So we told them we've found Yosuke,' Uemura said."

"The Nakamura family told police they had been teaching the bird its name and address for about two years."

By the way, Yosuke the parrot doesn't just talk to every person he meets. No, he has definite preferences about sharing his personal information with just anyone. He had no qualms about talking to the vet, but evidently doesn't like talking to cops. He refused to utter one word to Shinjiro Uemura, a policeman.

Mr. Uemura said: "'I tried to be friendly and talked to him, but he completely ignored me,' Uemura said."

for the above story. The quotations cited above are excerpts. Click this link to read the entire article.

The Nakamura family should be given an award for spending so much of their time trying to teach their pet parrot what to do in case of an emergency. Not all pet owners give this kind of care and attention to their pets. I would venture even further to say that not all parents pay this much attention to their children.

I found this to be a delightful true story when I saw it a few weeks ago, and decided to share it with those of you who missed it. If you believe that animals have little, or perhaps zero, intelligence, you might want to think again. It took the parrot 2 years to learn to recite his name and address, and that means a great deal of hard work and effort on the part of such a beautiful, and relatively small, creature.
Yosuke the parrot rests in his cage at his home in Nagareyama in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on Wednesday, after he went missing for two weeks.

Hillary: Resigned or Not Resigned? That Is The Question.

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Hillary Clinton officially announced her resignation from her presidential campaign (actually she said it was a suspension, which is not exactly the same thing) on Saturday, June 7, publicly declaring strong support for Barack Obama. 1

"The former first lady, who as recently as Tuesday declared herself the strongest candidate, gave Obama an unqualified endorsement and pivoted from her role as determined foe to absolute ally." 1

"'The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our energy and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States,' she said." 1

"Her passionate speech was delivered before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum." 1

"'Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary campaign he has won. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me,' the New York senator said." 1

"Obama, in a statement, declared himself 'thrilled and honored' to have Clinton' support." 1

"'I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run,' he said." "'She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans.'" 1

"For Clinton and her supporters, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination."1

"Indeed, her speech repeatedly returned to the milestone her candidacy represented for women. In primary after primary, her support among women was a solid bloc of her voting coalition. She noted that she had received the support of women who were 80 and 90 years old, born before women could even vote." 1

"She acknowledged the unprecedented success of Obama's candidacy, as well."

"'Children today will grow up taking for granted that an African-American or a woman can, yes, become the president of the United States,' she said." 1

"In deciding to suspend her campaign, Clinton kept some options open. She gets to retain her delegates to the nominating convention this summer and she can continue to raise money. It also means she could reopen her campaign if circumstances change before the Denver convention in late August, but she gave no indication that was her intention." 1

"Obama and Clinton had a face-to-face meeting Thursday evening at the Washington home of a Senate colleague, California Democrat Dianne Feinstein." 1

"Clinton was expected to campaign for Obama and to help with fundraising, while seeking his assistance in retiring her $30 million campaign debt. The New York senator has told colleagues she would be interested in joining Obama as his vice presidential running mate." 1

Conservative Wordsmith's Commentary: How is it possible that a presidential candidate, Barack Obama, can suddenly be transformed in the eyes of now former presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, from a "determined foe to absolute ally" (1) in just a few days? Will the 18 million Americans that supported Hillary Clinton be disappointed to learn that she now thinks (or pretends to think) that Barack Obama has the required skills to be the next U.S. President?

Many of us heard Hillary say, in previous debates, that Obama didn't have the experience that she (the great one, let us all bow to her on bended knee) had, and that she, not Obama, had been the person that actually did change things, and not just talk about it. Today Hillary Clinton evidently thinks that Barack Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

Hillary has disappointed me, because, even though she definitely never had one iota of my support (Mitt Romney's presidential campaign was a major focus of the Conservative Wordsmith Weblog in 2007), I did agree with her opinion that she was a more qualified candidate than Barack Obama. Is it possible that Hillary might perhaps be a bit more trustworthy also? I don’t really know who Hillary Clinton’s friends are, but at least I never heard or read any negative reports about them.

No, "Bill and Hill" will not again have the opportunity to sit in regal splendor at the White House, receiving the praise and adulation from their many adoring subjects, unless, of course, Hillary becomes Obama's choice for his vice presidential running mate, something that sparks her interest, according to the above cited article.

Doughnut Day Giveaway: Krispy Kreme Delivers

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will give away free doughnuts today, June 6, in honor of National Doughnut Day, which occurs every year on the first Friday of June. 1

"The celebration was launched in 1938, in the depths of the Great Depression, as a Salvation Army fund-raiser honoring the volunteer “lassies” who served coffee and fresh doughnuts by the thousands to homesick soldiers in France during World War I." 1

RFK: In Remembrance Of A Personal Hero

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Today is the anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination. RFK has always been one of my heroes. Bobby Kennedy possessed the highest degree of integrity, combined with a deep understanding of righteousness, tolerance, and the necessity of correcting injustices. Bobby Kennedy was also brilliant, a man of deep faith, a committed husband and devoted father, plus Bobby had a smile and down-to-earth manner of speaking that readily warmed the hearts of everyone.

America loved Bobby Kennedy, and his tragic, unexpected death by assassination was a shock to all Americans. It didn't really matter, in that chilling moment of awareness, whether he was a Democrat or Republican, a liberal or a conservative. This is something to think about now, forty years later, and in an election year.

If you are a liberal Democrat suffering from the disappointment that Hillary Clinton will not be our next president, think about this. Do you really want Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States of America? I know that some liberals actually like John McCain, and some conservatives think that he is too liberal. I also know that some liberals recognize that there is danger lurking in the possibility of Barack Obama actually becoming our next president.

Ann Coulter, a well-known conservative author, wrote last year that she would rather vote for Hillary Clinton than John McCain, declaring that she would become a “Hillary girl.”  *See my related post. What about Barack Obama, Ann? Are you now an "Obama girl" also? **Watch this video.

The bottom line is this: if you are a liberal or a conservative with a conscience, and you take your privilege to vote seriously, then you will vote for the best man, regardless of which political party he represents. Won't you?

Jon Lester's No-Hitter: "Something I'll Remember Forever"

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Jon Lester, a 24-year-old pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, is a young American baseball hero deserving of every baseball fan's cheers and admiration. There are miracles all around us, if only we would take the time to look for them.

Jon Lester

Boston Red Sox — No. 31
1

One would think that it is miraculous enough that Jon Lester is even pitching for the Boston Red Sox for the following two reasons:

1. "Lester wasn't even supposed to have been on Boston's postseason roster. He only got the call because Tim Wakefield, Boston's veteran knuckleballer, had an ailing shoulder. Still, he never got to bask in the full, deserved glory of the evening, as it was diminished by Scott Boras, who alerted the media in the middle of the game that Alex Rodriguez was opting out of his contract." 2

2. "In fact, it is something of a wonder that Lester, 24, is still in a Boston uniform. He was part of a proposed deal for Johan Santana this past off-season. Some years ago, as a minor-league prospect, he was offered as part of a package for Alex Rodriguez." 2

So there are several winners in this situation: Jon Lester, the Boston Red Sox, baseball fans, and baseball historians.

" . . . Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox had pitched a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals. The last time Jon Lester drew national notice was late last October, in the fourth and clinching game of the World Series. He threw five-and-two-thirds innings, allowing three hits, three walks and no runs, earned or otherwise. Of Lester's performance, the aging ace Curt Schilling concluded: "All things considered, the most clutch game I've ever seen."

"Between the Red Sox sweep and Boras' bulletin, Lester didn't get his due. But Monday night, he more than made up for that. The Royals, with a better team batting average than the Yankees and the Tigers and the Mets, are not quite the easy mark they have been for so many years. Still, they weren't a match for Lester, who had command of his entire arsenal, everything from a 78-mph curve to a 96-mph fastball that Alberto Callaspo could only flail at for the final out. Lester's first complete game in the majors just happened to be a no-hitter."
